Health & Wellness for All
Since our founding, YMCAs have provided health and fitness programs as an integral part of our mission. Today, YMCAs are the nation’s largest providers of health and wellness programs, and they welcome all, regardless of physical ability or income.Along with traditional sports programs, 42 percent of Ys offer non-sports-related youth fitness and exercise opportunities. One in five Ys offer programs specific to child obesity and one in 10 offer programs specific to youth or adult obesity. Ys provide physical education instruction in schools and to home schooled children nationwide.
YMCAs also provide exercise and aquatics programs for the physically challenged. More than 1,000 Ys offer arthritis aquatics classes, 350 offer fitness classes designed for people with physical disabilities, 552 offer aquatics classes for children with disabilities and 289 offer injury rehabilitation programs.
In an unprecedented national mobilization effort, YMCAs are working to combat rising levels of obesity and promote healthy living for millions of Americans via YMCA Activate America, an extensive, research-based partnership initiative aimed at implementing community-driven solutions to overcome the nation’s growing lifestyle health challenge.
